Beschreibungen

Applied Synthetic Biology is a fast emerging field of life sciences that brings together engineers and biologists with the aim of design and construction of novel biological systems, gene networks and biosynthetic pathways with unprecedented properties and functions for benefit of human civilization. There are no sharp lines of division between systems biology and synthetic biology. Systems biology is an interdisciplinary field of biological science that focuses on study of complex gene network interactions within biological systems. It can be used in quantitative description of cells or cell processes to refine the computational model or theory. Synthetic biology is a recently expanding area of biological sciences that is useful in the design and construction of novel synthetic gene network with predictive function that can help to change the cell physiology. Systems and synthetic biologists together are conducting research to uncover fundamental principles of biological mechanisms for applications in environmental and health management. The present volume 4 of 12 volume series on Recent Developments in Biotechnology promotes the systems and synthetic biology research for better understanding of cellular mechanism and construction of synthetic gene regulatory networks with the intention to pave the way for next-generation gene therapy and cellular reprogramming. This volume includes discussion on the following topics: o An introduction of synthetic biology o Principles of systems and synthetic biology o Introduction to complex biological networks o Genetic regulatory networks o Genome scale metabolic models in systems biology o Recent developments in synthetic biology o System biology of ageing process o Systematic reduction of microbial genomes o Mathematical modeling of biological networks o Modeling and analysis of biological networks o Liquid-crystalline approach in structural DNA nanotechnology o Application of synthetic molecules in biosensors o Use of micro fluidic devices in synthetic biology o Synthetic gene network engineering for cellular oscillations o Biological computing by the cellular gene network engineering o Directed evolution for advancing synthetic biology o Biotechnology and bioethics The volume 4 contains 17 chapters from 34 researchers and/or academicians representing 8 nations, namely, Brazil, Chile, France, Hungry, India, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom and United States of America giving an overview of the various research activities being carried out in different parts of the world in the field of Applied Synthetic Biology.
Vijai Singh currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Invertis University, Bareilly, India. He has previously worked as a Research Scientist from Biobrainz Life Sciences, Lucknow, India. He did his Postdoctoral training from Institute of Systems and Synthetic Biology, University of Evry, Evry, France. He received his Ph.D. degree in 2009 in Biotechnology from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, India. He pursued his career in Biotechnology as a Senior Research Fellow from National Bureau of Fish Genetic resources, Lucknow, India. His research interests include the development of molecular and immunoassays for disease diagnosis and also control of pathogens. He has performed the gene cloning, expression and characterization of hemolytic protein encoding gene of Aeromonas hydrophila, which has involved in hemorrhagic septicaemia disease. He has successfully developed the molecular and immunoassay for monitoring of hemorrhagic septicaemia disease. His further interests are the designing of novel gene regulatory networks with predictive task for the better understanding of cellular mechanism. He has successfully engineered and characterized the promoters, transcription factors and also novel gene regulatory networks especially a number of synthetic oscillators and biologic gate towards biotechnological applications. He is also interested in designing/ redesigning/rewiring of biosynthetic pathways for production value-added products. He has published 2 books, 2 book chapters, and 54 research articles. He serves as a member of editorial board of Journal of Synthetic Biology, American Journal of Current Microbiology and Journal of Current Systems & Synthetic Biology. He serves as a reviewer of number of peer-reviewed journals and also a member of number of international societies.

Dr. J.N. Govil (B. 1945): Obtained his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Agra University, Agra, India. In his career span of 41 years research experience at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, Dr.Govil has been involved in the breeding of cross-pollinated, often crosspollinated and self-pollinated crops. His research is mainly focussed on breeding for better quality, disease resistance, and for higher productivity in Pennisetum, Sorghum, maize, chickpea, and pigeonpea. Dr. Govil has been well exposed to the international scientific community through various training programmes. He took his training in "Plant exploration and collection techinques" through IBPGR in 1982. He was also awarded the prestigious FAO/IBPGR Fellowship in "Genetic resources, evaluation, and data preparation and management" at the University of Birmingham, UK.In 1983, he made visits to gene banks located in Europe. He also participated in various international seminars and conferences, including "Food and Legume Improvement for Asian Farming Systems" in Thailand in 1986. Dr. Govil is credited with more than ninety research papers in various journals of national and international repute in various aspects of genetics, crop breeding and topics on general agriculture. He has written and edited a number of books on medicinal Plants (2 Vols each of two Titles) and otherbooks with international authors. A new series "Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants" has been published by Studium Press, LLC, USA in 35 volumes under Dr. Govil's Chief Editorship. Dr. Govil has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journals, New Botanist (An International Journal of Plant Research)and Glimpses in Plant Research, since 1988. He has also guided more than a dozen post-graduate students. Dr. J.N. Govil was actively engaged through his leadership on pigeonpea breeding with special emphasis on "Breeding short duration pigeonpea varieties for improved management and low input conditions." Through his intensive efforts over the last 20 years, nine varieties of early pigeonpea in arhar-wheat rotation have been released at national level. Dr. Govil retired from ICAR service during the year 2007. Presently, he is working as Publishing Director and Managing Editor with Studium Press LLC, USA and has brought out nearly 300 academic publications during last five years.
