Beschreibungen

David Simon's The Wire lays out before us a city in which people struggle under the weight of poverty, political corruption, economic despair, educational collapse, and the drug trade. This volume explores the various theological, ethical, and philosophical challenges presented by The Wire. As each season of The Wire unfolds, the moral complexities of life in the city deepen, as the failures of one system have unforeseen effects in other corners of the city. Fleshing out the ongoing tension between the "earthly city" and the City of God, Corners in the City of God is a theological companion to David Simon's masterpiece, inviting the reader to wrestle with the implications of belonging fully to the cities of the world, in all of their splendor and tragedy.
Jonathan Tran is Associate Professor in the Department of Religion at Baylor University, where he and his family live. He is author of

"
Corners in the City of God is a refreshingly diverse and challenging volume that engages the social, political, and ultimately theological implications of the celebrated television series and life in urban America."
"This book should create a conversation about those places we have 'left behind,' but God has not. It is an imaginative synthesis of culture, politics, and theology. Every undergraduate theology curriculum would be well served by creating a course that explores these 'corners' through the analyses in this work."
--D. Stephen Long, Marquette University

"These sharp-edged essays paradoxically witness to the hope that the world of
The Wire and thousands like it have not been forsaken--not by the incarnate Word and not by those who follow Christ open-eyed to the gates of hell."
--Erin Dufault-Hunter, Fuller Theological Seminary

"In eschatological terms,
The Wire focuses our attention squarely on the 'not yet,' exposing the gulf between our ideals and practices, between hope and reality. In David Simon's Baltimore, every person and institution--and of course the city itself--is flawed. While transformation is not impossible, it is fragile and fraught.
Corners in the City of God wrestles with this unrelenting realism, opening up prophetic possibilities through bold theological reflection."
--Noah Toly, Wheaton College
